It was great seeing everyone at the Association of Medical Illustrator’s Conference in Austin this year! For those who couldn’t get to the embedded Python Molecular Viewer (ePMV) Technique Showcase with myself, Graham Johnson, and Fabian de Kok-Mercado, here are the PDF documents.

Building a Complex Virus Using Cryo-Electron Microscopy  Data and Creating a Coarse Molecular Surface from Metaballs

These two tutorials use different approaches to create molecular surface models in Cinema4D from data imported by the ePMV plugin. The first leverages ePMV’s data player to import a 3D, volumetric cryo-EM map file of an Ebola virus surface spike from the Electron Microscopy Data Bank (EMDB). The second uses a spline backbone model generated from a molecule’s PDB file to serve as a skeleton for a Metaball object, and adjusts the settings to create a coarse molecular surface.

Creating a Metaball Master Control with Xpresso

Ever had multiple Metaball (or Subdivision Surface) objects in a scene and wanted to edit them all at once? This tutorial shows how to control all your objects in one place using custom User Data and a simple Xpresso rig. It also includes a review of the basics of Xpresso.
